Spectacular Ocean View
It is wonderful to sit on the deck of my beach house with a cold and salty margarita, fresh from the blender, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at the beach. The spectacular ocean view with waves breaking against basalt rocks along the shore is delightful to see. Perhaps even a colorful sunset as the sun slips behind the horizon while you share this experience with friends or loved ones.
I confess. I can only imagine that scenario on Cinco de Mayo. You know why I can only imagine? Because my beach house is very popular and it is always booked for the 5th of May. Fortunate guests get to enjoy the experience. I have never had the pleasure on that exact day.
A Cadillac Margarita
For me, I usually go out to a local Mexican restaurant and enjoy a Margarita. A Cadillac Margarita to be exact. Only one margarita is allowed because I am a real light weight when it comes to tequila. I savor it slowly with appreciation, the tartness of the lime mixed with the salt on the rim, mmm good. Whoever made that drink up needs to be celebrated.
Why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
In a tiny little nutshell, historically, celebration of Cinco de Mayo in Mexico was in recognition of victory over France in the Battle of Puebla in 1862 during the Franco-Mexican war. The out-numbered Mexican army managed to overcome their French foe, the largest army in the world. Although it did not end the conflict, this victory instilled pride and motivation as Mexico fought to keep France from infiltrating their country.
Cinco de Mayo was first celebrated in California in the 1860’s as a stand against French rule in Mexico. Recognition of Cinco de Mayo spread across the nation over the years and turned more into a celebration of heritage, similar to how March 17 is a celebration of Irish heritage. In the 1980’s, beverage companies, especially beer (and tequila) companies, capitalized on marketing opportunities of the celebration. As a result of the success of this promotion, Cinco de Mayo is currently celebrated globally. Many of those raising a glass to Cinco de Mayo have no idea how the date gained significance.
Now, I believe in responsible imbibing of alcoholic beverages. I enjoy my frozen concoction on this day and pose a toast or two as I celebrate. Bring on the chips and salsa. How about that chili relleno or fajita; maybe both? Hey, I advise to drink responsibly, but I might not eat responsibly today.
Cinco de Mayo at the Beach
Enjoy your celebration of Cinco de Mayo at the beach. Drink responsibly and safe travels with your designated driver.
If you are really fortunate, you get to just hang out on the deck of my beach house watching the ocean and the sunset without even having to leave your Adirondack.
