Foodies Adventure at Yachats Brewing

Another fun Foodies Adventure in Yachats, Oregon

Foodies Adventure at Yachats Brewing

This Blog post is part of the Foodies Adventure series. I highlight restaurants and shops that cater to the epicurean experience in our charming coastal town. Thus, I hope you find this information helpful as you plan your Central Oregon Coast vacation in Yachats, Oregon. Today I focus on my foodies adventure at Yachats Brewing.

Old growth Douglas fir trees

A visit to Yachats Brewing + Farm Store is nearly a spiritual exploration. For starters, the building was constructed in 1965. The current owners have painstakingly rebuilt the inside structure using salvaged and reclaimed materials. Much of the reclaimed wood used in the remodel is from old growth Douglas fir and Alder trees. Hence, each piece of wood is deserving of touch and appreciation as it reflects the soul of a tree that once stood proudly in an area forest.

On the other hand, you may be connecting with the soul of a vintage wine barrel. As a wine enthusiast, I appreciate wine barrels. Once an oak barrel has completed it’s purpose of helping develop the flavors in a potential wine, it also makes into very cool bar stools and tables. Therefore, you may seat yourself at some fine examples in the Yachats Brewing + Farmstore.

Enjoy a beer tasting flight

My favorite part about visiting the brewery is enjoying a ‘flight’, a beer tasting. On a visit last winter, my son guided me through the nuances of beer terms as we enjoyed four particular tastings. Descriptions like, blackberry, apple, earthy, and tart tannins, mineral, and sweet are some of the words I heard. I like anything that is Earthy. If you are anything like me you will enjoy a dark beer. First, I must recommend the Nitro Black Irish by Double Mountain. It is a smooth coffee stout with delectable fine foam on top. My favorite!

Serving healthy brunches and dinners, entrees range from approximately $12 to $15. Lots of organic ingredients and even some heirloom vegetables are included. A menu of interesting house-made ferments, smoked meats and fish is also available, along with daily specials. Second, I tried a cream of celery soup with the house made sourdough bread. I must say it was absolutely excellent. Oh, and customer service is pleasant and helpful.  The number 1 reason I recommend the Brewery!

Yachats Brewery is a comfortable place to enjoy a meal and a brew

On my off-season visit I found several patrons gathered at wooden tables. We sat on bar stools at the window counter overlooking the street. It was fun talking with both locals and visitors to the area as the atmosphere is casual and friendly. Decorative items taken from nature spurred me to take a closer look. Delicate succulents planted into knot holes of  small pieces of drift wood add to the casual ambiance. Outdoor seating is also available out front for enjoying pleasant evenings.  As a result, Yachats Brewery is a fun place to kick back.

Lucy Cheeks was on the job

Reports from the local area Ladies Room Aficionado, Lucy Cheeks, found the facilities to be, “a very nice private bathroom for customers.   Plaster-look walls of gray with tile wainscoting, and colored concrete floor compliment the purpose of the visit. Funky oyster art is interesting. Additionally, fixtures are clean and the auto-towel dispenser was working and filled with an adequate supply of paper. A refreshing experience, for certain.” Thanks again, Lucy. It is relieving that you are always on top of your game.

Hiking in Yachats Oregon

Gerdemann Botanic GardensHiking in Yachats Oregon

Gerdemann Botanic Gardens is one of my favorite hikes in Yachats. This is an easy hike and only takes about 15 minutes from beginning to end. Fortunately, the location of the garden is a perfect hike straight from our Sea Anemone vacation home. Add another 15 minutes from our house and you have a nice 60 minute or so round-trip stroll, depending on your pace. The Sea Anemone is a great starting point for pleasant hiking in Yachats Oregon.

Hiking in Yachats OregonUpon entering you find yourself surrounded by native spruce and hemlock trees. Many types of other shrubs and trees are planted in this 3 ½ acre preserve. Magnolia, camellia and rhododendrons bloom in the spring alongside trillium, lilies and bleeding hearts.

I find the large leaf rhododendrons especially interesting as it is a different species from what I usually find along other hiking trails. Hiking in Yachats Oregon

Good walking shoes work best over the graveled trail. Wooden railing and steps help along the way over rougher terrain. Information is posted describing various plants and the animals that visit the area. Keep an eye out for elves living in a log along the path.

Jim and Janis Gerdemann

This site was developed and nurtured by Jim and Janis Gerdemann. Jim was the botanist who worked to establish this lovely garden. He experimented with planting, and in some cases developing, select plant species from around the world along side native plants and trees. The result is this peaceful woodland paradise that surrounds you with luscious greenery. The preserve is relaxing and quiet with Mitchell Creek providing the refreshing background sound of trickling water.

Ya ‘Xaik TrailHiking in Yachats Oregon

Upon reaching the exit gate at the far end of the garden you can turn around and retrace your steps to the Sea Anemone vacation home. Or, exit the garden at the far end and continue onto the Ya ‘Xaik Trail, another adventure in greenery with a bit more elevation. This hike is still fairly easy and eventually brings you back to Diversity Lane and Highway 101. Add another 30 minutes or so to your hike if you include the Ya ‘Xaik Trail. This makes a nice duo for experiencing hiking in Yachats Oregon.
